David Morago presents Zwischenzeit, a solo exhibition at Urban Spree, Berlin, bringing together the works created during his four-month residency at the renowned independent cultural centre. Represented by SOLO Contemporary, Morago unveils a new body of work that marks a pivotal moment in his career, reflecting the evolution of his painting practice towards a new visual language.
On view from 24 July to 22 August 2026, the exhibition captures a period of artistic transformation shaped by his time in Berlin.
Developed within a cultural context radically different from that of his native Spain, Zwischenzeit explores the space between figuration and abstraction. The exhibition presents a new body of work shaped by Morago’s time in Berlin, where the city’s urban landscape, light and visual culture have informed an increasingly experimental approach to painting based on colour, formal synthesis and material exploration.
Its title, the German word for “in-between time”, refers to a state of transition: the moment in which one artistic language begins to disappear while another is still taking shape. Rather than presenting a completed transformation, Zwischenzeit invites viewers to witness the creative process itself, embracing uncertainty, experimentation and possibility as central elements of the exhibition.
This project continues the artistic evolution that began in 2025, following Morago’s incorporation into SOLO Contemporary’s artist support programme. During this period, he developed Glitch, a new series that moves away from the naturalistic representation that had long characterised his work in favour of a visual language built around fragmentation, colour and references drawn from manga, anime and contemporary visual culture. At the same time, his practice expanded technically through the use of airbrush, spray paint and pigment transfer, opening new expressive possibilities.
The works featured in Zwischenzeit demonstrate the continued development of this new language. Simplified forms, bold linear structures and vibrant chromatic relationships establish a dialogue with the legacy of Bauhaus aesthetics, reinforcing Morago’s growing interest in abstraction, perception and visual rhythm.
David Morago has exhibited internationally since the late 1990s. Holding a Fine Arts degree from the Complutense University of Madrid, his work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Europe and North America, including Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, Athens and Montreal, while also being featured in numerous contemporary art fairs. His work is held in important public and private collections. In recent years, his practice has evolved from meticulous naturalistic painting towards a more experimental pictorial language centred on abstraction and fragmentation: a transition that culminates in the Glitch series and Zwischenzeit.
