Osang developed an early fascination with art, driven by an innate curiosity for reimagining traditional sculptural forms. Studying at Hongik University, he pursued both a BFA and MFA in sculpture, where he began challenging conventional approaches by merging photography with three-dimensional forms. His artistic vision is shaped by a desire to reconcile opposing forces—consumerism and classicism—by transforming familiar imagery into thought-provoking, unconventional sculptures. Inspired by 20th-century masters such as Auguste Rodin and contemporary visual culture, his works blur the boundaries between materiality and illusion, questioning the identity of sculpture itself.
His creative process is defined by a meticulous layering of photography onto sculptural forms, seamlessly blending two-dimensional imagery with three-dimensional structures. He captures hundreds, sometimes thousands, of images from multiple angles, carefully assembling them over lightweight materials such as Styrofoam or resin. This technique creates a striking visual effect, where the surfaces appear hyperreal yet fragmented, evoking a sense of both presence and absence. By using photography to skin his sculptures, he challenges the permanence of traditional materials, offering an illusion of solidity that is, in reality, ephemeral and weightless. This method allows him to explore themes of mass media, consumer culture, and the interplay between surface and depth.
His work has been exhibited extensively worldwide, with solo exhibitions at Arario Gallery (Seoul, Shanghai), Waterfall Gallery (New York), and Hermès (Sydney), among others. His sculptures have also been featured in prominent group exhibitions at institutions like the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Korea), Saatchi Gallery (London), and Singapore Art Museum. Beyond gallery spaces, he has collaborated with brands such as BMW, Riot Games, and Hermès, further embedding his artistic practice within commercial and cultural landscapes. His works are held in major collections, including the Leeum Samsung Museum of Art and the Seoul Museum of Art, cementing his status as a pioneering figure in contemporary sculpture.
